MTN8 Semi-Final: Mngqithi Laments Sundowns’ 1-0 Loss to Stellenbosch
Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, was in a sombre mood following his team’s loss to Stellenbosch FC in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final on Sunday, 1 September.
Playing at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, a sole goal from striker Lehlohonolo Mojela in the 48th minute allowed Stellies to seal a 1-0 victory over the reigning Premier Soccer League champions.
As a result, the Cape Winelands outfit – having beaten Sundowns on a 2-0 aggregate – will now face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final on 5 October.
In a post-match interview, Mngqithi lamented his men’s poor performance, despite their best efforts to wear out their opponents and break through their defences.
“We knew that we had to play a very patient game, because [Stellenbosch] have also played a lot of matches in a very short space of time,” he said.
“We wanted to make sure that we tried to get an early goal and unfortunately, again, we had a very poor start, and we only recovered probably about after 20 minutes to try to impose ourselves. But unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.”
